Scaling Maturity: A Theoretical Framework for Self-Financed Scaling in Tech Startups

SSRN-Working-Paper (Preprint). Veröffentlicht am 26. August 2026. Diese Fassung ist nicht peer-reviewed.

Abstract

This paper introduces Scaling Maturity as a theoretical framework for understanding and achieving sustainable growth in self-financed tech startups. It defines Scaling Maturity as the capability to repeatedly transform growth-induced pressure into precise structural adaptations that stabilize the system before further expansion. The framework consists of three interconnected components: (1) Scaling Maturity as a capability, (2) scaling readiness as an empirical state, and (3) a core sequence (Pressure → Clarity → Small Redesign → Stability → Scaling) as the operational process. Through this triangulation, the framework provides a complete theoretical foundation that distinguishes between growth (proportional expansion) and scaling (leverage-based expansion), offering a systematic approach to scaling that avoids the common pitfalls of premature expansion. The framework addresses a critical gap in entrepreneurship literature by providing a mechanism-based approach to scaling that is specifically tailored to the constraints of self-financed startups operating without external capital.
